More encouragement for the discontented heart

While we're on about contentment, I happened upon another Puritan's perspective:

"Beware of murmuring and fretting under any dispensations of providence that you meet with; remembering that nothing falls out without a wise and holy providence, which knows best what is fit and proper for you. And in all cases,... learn submission to the will of God, as Job did, when he said "The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord". ~Thomas Boston

Great quotes. I'm enjoying your posts even though I don't always comment. Thanks! Yes, God's providence is good. And we are to be wary of those who believe God brings only their own version of "good" into our lives. God causes all things...Prov. 16:4 "The Lord has made everything for its own purpose; even the wicked for the day of the end." And so we have to look to ourselves, in my case cancer, and know that God has brought that into my life for my good. To humble me, to build in me a more loving attitude towards others who are ill. I'm grateful through it all.

Contrast this with the attitude shown in the poem "Invictus" as posted in boomerinthepew.com. The difference is like night and day.

Morning Phil,

Glad to hear your voice! I Hope you and your wife are recovering nicely.

Good ole Boomer! I did read that poem the other day, and you're right - night and day. One sees God/fate as adversary, the other as Father; which is exactly right. Apart from Christ we are adversaries of God; in Christ we are His beloved children.

Thanks Laurie, we are healing well. My brace comes off in 4 weeks and Diane will be able to start using her leg again then as well. My mother has just returned home after staying with us for 2 weeks, which was a great help.

The attitude described by Thomas Boston is the only natural one to someone who truly sees God as Father. Even accidents can be messengers of grace to those who receive them as such. That's how we see ours, anyway.
